Ugly Or A Classic? You Tell Us!

May 15, 2007

Bridesmaid

"When I was 14 years old, my cousin asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. That was the first time I ever was in a wedding," recalls Connie, who donned the poofy gown in 1956. "In this particular picture, I am wearing the same ugly bridesmaid gown for my Sweet Sixteen party. I just came across this old photo and can't believe how ugly this bridesmaid dress really was! This picture is so old, years ago when this picture was taken, they only did pictures in black and white! Uglyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!"

Although Connie hated the gown, we think she looks like a classic high school beauty queen! Tell us what you think: Is this dress ugly or not?

i LOVE this dress!!!!...i would so0o totally wear it TO a wedding, but no neccessarily IN a wedding. But thanks for giving me an idea to design my OWN dresses...i'm currently working on my degree in fashion designing.

CUTE!!!!

Stella | Jun 11, 2007 1:06:02 PM

The shoes are real cute though... sort of Cinderella-y.

Hey I like your dress but I think the sash doesn't look good with that dress. And i dont like the big fat rim or whatever you call it and maby a nicer pair of shoes would od but i still like the dress nice and classy...........

ps. hope you had fun

I LOVE this dress. So classic. You look great in it!

Dawn | May 30, 2007 4:18:06 PM

I think the dress is absolutely gorgeous!!

Carol | May 28, 2007 1:05:20 PM

I think this is a really beautiful dress.

teresa | May 27, 2007 3:42:05 PM

It is pretty. That was the style in the fifties, my mother had some similar gowns she wore to dances, and they are so lovely to me. Strapless classics with tons of tulle, and sequins gently sparkling every layer.

Amanda | May 26, 2007 3:47:02 PM

I think the dress is gorgeous. My sister recently had her prom, and her dress looked a lot like it. I wish I could have a dress like it!

Billie | May 25, 2007 3:40:12 PM

I love it!!! Classic!

KatieMo | May 24, 2007 1:53:07 PM

I would KILL for a dress like this!!! It's amazing.

I'm actually turning 30 this July, and have been looking EVERYWHERE for something similar. My birthday party's theme is "not-so-sweet not-so-sixteen."

mandy | May 22, 2007 1:18:49 PM

I think the dress is beautiful, much better then the crap they wear today. (or lack there of-not much material to have girls wearing in your wedding photos) I would wear this dress or have bridesmaids wear it.

Scarlett | May 21, 2007 8:02:59 PM

not ugly but not modern. present day dresses look different but its a fine dress. id try it on.

katie | May 20, 2007 3:40:05 AM

it looks classically ugly!!!!!!!!! gross shoes, ugly dress. Doesn't show figure!!!!

Angel | May 19, 2007 6:51:49 PM

Timeless beauty. I am not crazy about the sash being so wide but this dress is classic elegance.

Rochelle Alford | May 19, 2007 8:34:48 AM

What a giggle I had when I saw this picture. The dress is almost identical to the one I wore to my first formal dance in 1956 (I still have a B&W photo). Everyone at the dance admired the dress and said the pale green looked beautiful with my auburn hair. The dress was the height of fashion and I loaned it more than once, and wore it as a junior bridesmaid at my cousin's wedding. Shoes for the dance were ecru patent leather with rounded toes and a 1" heel. The shoes were upgraded to dyed-to-match satin with rhinestone shoe clips.(It was the 50's and we didn't throw anything away) In a few years prom dresses that look like cheap lingerie will be considered ugly and totally unflattering, even in a colorized digital print.

The dress is ok.It's a classic!
But the other lady's shoes are unforgivable! How could she?:D

Lola | May 18, 2007 1:27:35 PM

I think it is very cute i really like it! It looks like something i would wear.

Shawn | May 18, 2007 12:25:44 PM

The shoes are HIDEOUS, but the dress is actually quite nice - no poofy sleeves or layers like a cake. I could easily see a celebrity wearing something similar (maybe SJP?)

Rachel | May 18, 2007 1:57:26 AM

i like the skirt to it, if the top was corseted(as a previous poster said), it would have been a total knockout dress.. and i absolutely LOVE the shoes, i wish i could find some like that nowadays :(

susan dunn | May 17, 2007 11:09:24 PM

i love it so classic.........not showing tons of skin and i bet every boy wanted to dance with u

Lisa | May 17, 2007 3:14:12 PM

I think it looks pretty. Now, if it was mint green or something...that could be different....

ana | May 17, 2007 3:11:40 PM

I actually like this dress, and i think it looked great on you. Like the others say "nothing to be ashamed of"

Katherine jones | May 17, 2007 9:52:35 AM

I think a classic look so is great because it's more beuatiful than something you good get by any famous desinger

Jigglypuff | May 16, 2007 10:06:37 PM

Very classic shilouette! This dress is definitely MUCH better tan the ugly '80 dresses. If I were the bride, I would pick dresses like these!

Carolyn | May 16, 2007 8:55:45 PM

I bet you were so pretty dancing in it! Wow, I would have been so happy to have had a Sweet Sixteen party. Be thankful you had such a pretty dress to wear.

kim | May 16, 2007 8:47:21 PM

I'm pretty sure I've seen Scarlet Jo and Eva Longoria in a dress just like this.

Misti | May 16, 2007 5:31:36 PM

I like it! It's a classic and that NEVER goes out of style!!

Elisabeth | May 16, 2007 3:50:57 PM

I am not a huge fan of 1950's style, in anything, so I can understand why the person sent in the picture, it isn't a very flattering dress with the thick waistband going into a pouf skirt. However, it would have worked if the dress had been corseted like many shown in 1950's fashion magazines or on film (i.e. Elizabeth Taylor’s famous party gown in “A Place in the Sun). That said, it isn't nearly as dreadful as the 1980's styles. High fashion in the 1980’s was bad but nothing could redeem the interpretations sold to the mass market, those were the epitome of bad taste they just make you cringe!

Maureen | May 16, 2007 12:48:03 PM

I LOVE this dress!!! Very classy and stylish. I actually wish this look would come back in style.

joanne | May 16, 2007 9:39:53 AM

LOVE it...I'm in my mid 30's but have always felt like I should've been a teenager in the 50's just to be able to wear dresses like that one. It certainly wouldn't be something I'd wear now, but back then, I bet that dress was THE fashion and other girls were jealous!

Kaillee | May 15, 2007 11:27:39 PM

I'm gonna go with the masses her. This is a really great dress ! I don't know what the color actually was but it really looks like a classic to me.

maryesq | May 15, 2007 2:04:29 PM

I like it better than most of the dresses on this blog. Very old Hollywood glamour. Nothing to be ashamed of here.

Amber | May 15, 2007 12:33:26 PM

I actually kinda like this. It seems kinda retro and classic. Not too bad. Compared to some of the ones I've seen from the 70's and 80's, I think the 50's were pretty tame. ;)
