Saved By A Burgundy Velvet Ribbon... Sorta

"When the dresses arrived, they were solid white. We didn't want to upstage the bride -- who resembled Little Bo Peep -- and this group of bridesmaids certainly were not as pure as the driven snow," explains La Crosse, Wisc., bridesmaid Leslie of the frilly gown she wore for a friend's 1979 wedding. "So, to differentiate us from the bride, we added two bands of burgundy velvet ribbon. Classy, huh?" We think it was a sweet gesture on the bridesmaids' part, but Leslie says that, even for the 70's, this dress was a fashion disaster. "Some dresses stand the test of time and some don't," she says. "This one didn't stand the test of the moment!"

I think it's a cute dress... Bad tux, though!

I believe that this dress is the mos hideous thing I have ever seen. And why is she carrying a candle??
Duh!

Eww! That tux is the most ugly thing ever!!!

I tried to talk my fiancee into having everyone dress like this in our July 2008 wedding! This is like a dream-wedding for me, because I'm sick of looking at the same generic pre-packaged weddings everywhere. It would be really fun to bust out the baby-blue tux, or burgundy, or burnt orange, and force the bridesmaids to wisp up their hair into a Farrah Fawcett style.
Kudos to you on the dress, though. Definitely a standard 70s style, and considered lovely at the time, and I think dressing it up with the ribbons was brilliant.

I actually like the dress. It would have been better without the ruffles at the necklines, though.

I think i was a sweet idea but i have to admit i don't think i could have been so nice to my friends if they would have put me in such a ugly dress. Even if it was a day meant to be all about them. An ugly dress is an ugly dress no matter what the day may be.

I think it's a beautiful dress.

Is she carrying a candle?

Given this dress was worn in the late 70's, I think it's cute and flattering. Love the color adding idea. But did anybody look at that tux!!!! One word: Awful!

I think it's sweet that the bridesmaids compromised looking interesting so the bride would look the best and stand out. No matter what those dresses looked like, their beauty inside more then made up for it.
