We Didn't Know Hefty Bags Came In Red

April 17, 2007

Bridesmaid

This bridesmaid was seeing red over the baggy crimson gown she was forced to wear for her cousin's backyard wedding. "It looked like a red trash bag," Kristin from Buffalo, N.Y., tells PEOPLE.com. "They were made by a grandmother." But unlike Grandma's homemade apple pie, these dresses were far from endearing. "They needed to be altered about 20 times, and they still turned out like trash bags."

We've definitely seen worse, but on the Ugly-O-Meter (with ten being the absolute worst), we give these shapeless scarlet sheaths a three. How about you?

Not bad at all. The color and the fabric are both good. The problem is the fit, especially on the girl on the right. Some good alterations would have made this dress look great on both of them.

the girl on the right should have altered her dress and they could have added different color sashes like blue, black or just any color to go with this red and it would have liked like they have more of a figure. The shoes for the girl wearing the tie should have chose some low heel shoes since she is pretty tall and when I do get married I will probably have only one bridesmaid and let her pick what dress she wants in what color i choose and she can pick her own shoes. I have been seeing weddings wear the bride picks the color of the dress and shoes and then the bridesmaids pick the style of their dress and shoes so that they can wear the dresses and shoes again. On the good side if u get ur shoes at davids bridal u can go back to the store and get them redyed to a color u want like if u have to wear pink shoes to the wedding to match the dress take them to the store and redye them black, white or whatever color u want since it usually cost all the same price range.

The colour is lovely, and the fabric has a substantial, quality look to it. No, the fit isn't professional, especially on the taller girl, and it isn't the best possible style for her, but there are many less flattering gowns out there (and in here).

I have to say, a lot of those less flattering gowns are in fact the strapless ones. There's a collective fad for strapless amongst brides, both for their own gowns and their bridesmaids, which will produce a nice healthy crop of "what was I thinking???" in a couple of decades. Believe me, in twenty years, there will be as many strapless gowns posted here as there are of the drop-waisted, butt-bowed, pouffed-sleeved variety.

That is a classic princess A-Line sheath and it looks good on most figures. If the larger girl were standing straighter, she'd look as good as the smaller woman. I agree the color was bold, but red can be classy if it's done well. I bet both of those women look lovely in the formal photos.

the most beautiful. I love the color and the style. You get a 100% grade from me.

BRITTANY | Apr 23, 2007 1:47:16 PM

EVEN THOUGH THE DRESS ON THE RIGHT COULD HAVE BEEN MADE TO SHOW MORE OF HER CURVES, THE DRESSES ARE PRETTY. THE ONE ON THE LEFT LOOKS FINE!

Grace | Apr 21, 2007 1:08:50 PM

Even though they're not as bad as most of the dresses we've seen here, they do kinda resemble theater curtains.

Susan | Apr 20, 2007 3:37:55 AM

No, these dresses don't hold a candle to some others, but a bad fit can ruin any dress. And no, there is no dress that flatters every shape, but this one flatters none!

tct | Apr 19, 2007 3:32:22 PM

Not really that ugly.

Christabelle | Apr 19, 2007 11:05:41 AM

While the dresses aren't hideous, you can tell they aren't made professionally either. See how the top of the dress fits too snugly around the girls' chests? I sure hope the bride didn't make them actually pay for these things!!

Jill | Apr 19, 2007 1:36:27 AM

Boooooo!! What a joke. These dresses are not bad at all. I think the one on the right could have been brought in a tad bit but the actual dresses/material is okay.

Mary | Apr 18, 2007 11:06:09 PM

What is with so many brides choosing strapless, both for themselves and their attendants? Six of the last seven weddings I've attended had everyone in strapless. There are very few women who can really carry this look. Many brides spend months getting in shape for their day but it's unrealistic to think their bridemaids will do likewise. And to top it off, all sorts of tattos are evident and not all are sweet butterflies and flowers. The strapless look is way overdone and boring! I also think it is too bare for a sacred church service - OK, that makes me an old fogey!

The dress on the left looks great. The girl on the right, her dress isnt fitted to well. Other than that, the dresses are nice!

Carrie | Apr 18, 2007 3:35:06 PM

It's pretty obvious that this dress looks nicer in the lady on the left. You just have to have a certain body type to look nice in this dress.

HLS | Apr 18, 2007 9:54:57 AM

The dress on the left is totally fine. The dress on the right is a bit shapeless, but the color and material are fine. I agree with Michelle - sometimes you just have to suck it up. Not every body type looks great in every style of dress, and it's pretty difficult to find one that suits all bridesmaids.

Kristen | Apr 18, 2007 9:36:58 AM

I don't see anything wrong with these dresses at all...

Karen | Apr 18, 2007 7:48:54 AM

I agree with Kristen. These dresses are cute!!! Just because it was a good style for all sizes doesn't mean they were hideous.

Michelle Lindsey | Apr 17, 2007 4:35:13 PM

As I described in a previous article. If you are bridesmaid and you are asked to wear an ugly bridesmaid dress, you owe it to the bride to suck it up, be quiet, wear it and smile.

Kristin | Apr 17, 2007 4:30:39 PM

Whatever, these dresses are fine. Us gals who don't weigh 110 pounds can appreciate a dress that isn't skin tight. I think they look fine.

Kat | Apr 17, 2007 2:48:42 PM

My daughterinlaw chose dresses very similiar to this with the only difference being a strip of material above the bust with black tuxes & red roses. They looked great, matching red rose petals were all in the church. I thought it was classy.

This dress shouldn't even be on here, give me a break.
